I find it helpful to imagine that behind every phenomena encountered, there is a creative intelligence trying to make the best of it. It's a sort of sympathetic animism, suggestive that there is no bad intent, only good intents misapplied and actions lost control of. Which is not to say that one should run up and greet hopefully every being who is in the throes of gaining some civility of their own Self-composure. The worlds which we can enter may be dangerous, especially the so-called "lower".
I believe that God, and/or that which is encompassing of that which we can imagine God to be (love and light in the greatest senses), spins off in the generousity of its divine imagination endless copies of itself, copies which have before them the opportunity and challenge of becoming the full-fledged loving caring creators of their own "times" and "spaces". On the ways mistakes are allowed; we will not be abandoned. God must allow our errors of conception for what is good and true, else how would we learn to be self-reliant and self-correcting?
Ultimately the universe is an ordered place, so we become our own best punishments and rewards, as we are sorted into the companies of our similars. We become ourselves. If someone wishes to to harbor cruelties then they may, and they will see for themselves how they like the company of their peers as their cruel world increases. This includes the cruelty of not allowing others to have good intents, which is why bad things can happen to good people.
It is not the judgement of God when we are capable of changing our own conditions, but the judgement of ourselves. For example, it has been cleverly noted that the punishment of the liar is not that the liar will necessarily ever be caught and sentenced for anything, but that the liar cannot trust anyone. They cannot be loved. And so it goes, for
crime only pays if you wish to live the life of a criminal, and God, your friend guide mentor and ideal, never does.
The great astral moralist Emanuel Swedenborg noted that "People are born to become angels", but on the way to this potential they can become many devils, and many have in order to populate the hellish potentials. Such a tragedy this is, because the choice between good and evil was always meant
to be the first no-brainer on the way to becoming your own loving creative intelligence. There are so many more choices between goods and betters ahead, infinitely many in fact just waiting to be made for the sheer joy of defining yourself.
