The great standing stone faces of Easter Island are perhaps the most recognized spirit statues in the world. Here we see in smaller version one of the Easter Island akuakus, or guardian spirits, that were presented in 1955 to the explorer Thor Heyerdahl. Like some intuitively guided or reincarnated ancient himself, Heyerdahl is famous for recreating the voyages in authentic rafts which the Polynesians would have surely made to cross the great Pacific, to or from South America, with Hawaii in between. On Easter Island, Heyerdahl was regarded as supernatural in powers, and given several "holy, serious stones", these akuakus, by a native couple from the store of their ancestral cave. |
