Yarn painting by Mexican Huichol Indian shaman Ulu Temay. His peyote vision of helper spirits includes a nealika seen in the center, which is a colored energy disk that a Huichol shaman receives in a dream and later offers in reproductions to spirits as proof and reminder of their mission together. Ulu says that this nealika granted him healing energy from the sun and rain-making powers of the Rain Mothers, seen in the feathered wands from sun and rain. Spirits of deer offered knowledge for using powers with wisdom and precaution, eagle offered power to see all, and snakes spoke with the wise voice of Grandfather fire, rattling their rattles to say that they would be Ulu's allies and make him strong against harm-doers. |

Ulu Temay with his shaman's tools, which include feathered wands to create channels of energy for spirit communication. Huichol shamans use psychadelic substances such as peyote and mescaline for visions that confirm and build upon their extensive dreamwork with the spirit world. Powers gained from spirit allies are used for healing in the tribes. |
